Karens story imageKaren age 61 from Iver, is finally free from pain – but it took some time finding the right treatment with the right consultant.

At the end of  November 2018, Karen had slipped on the bottom stair at home with her granddaughter, age two, in her arms. They both were fine, but she didn’t feel quite right, so she went to see her GP who referred her to Hillingdon Hospital. She had an X-ray which showed she had wear and tear on her knee and needed treatment. Initially, she had a steroid injection which did improve her condition and then some physiotherapy in the March. Fortunately, her husband had private medical insurance which entitled her to eight physiotherapy sessions.  But even after these sessions, she still had a swelling on the left-hand side of her knee. She then tried acupuncture, but this also didn’t work.

So, in May 2019, Karen went back to her GP who referred her to an orthopaedic consultant. She contacted her insurance company who gave her a list of orthopaedic consultants – Karen googled these, looking at their reviews and from that research, she decided on Mr Vedi and contacted his secretary Jane.

She saw Mr Vedi, who sent her for an MRI and X-ray which revealed she had a stress fracture on her knee and a damaged cartilage. Mr Vedi couldn’t believe Karen was still able to walk as she must be in excruciating pain.

He advised that she wear an off-loader brace for a month to get her through her holiday. In August, she had another X-ray which showed that her stress fracture had collapsed and Mr Vedi recommended she have a full knee replacement.

She had surgery on the 9th November and was in hospital for three nights before being allowed home. She then used one crutch for about a week before being able to walk around unaided.

Karen concludes, “Mr Vedi, I feel I owe everything to you and all your excellent staff. You exude so much confidence in the patient before the operation, I had no qualms about any mishaps. The anaesthetist was wonderful with the epidurals and care given to me; and, of course your team. I was given so much care and attention I felt I was the only patient in the hospital. Your manner towards your patients and to your staff is absolutely first class. It's only a week since I had the operation but for the first time in 12 months, I am pain free. I feel so positive about the future and also feel so very relieved. Thank you so much Mr Vedi to you and your staff.”
