Alan, age 62TREATMENT: Bilateral Total Hip ReplacementsAlan, age 62 from Maidenhead is now free from pain having had bilateral hip replacements with Mr Vedi within four months of each other.

Alan’s issues started 30 years previously when he began getting muscle problems and pain in his lower back. Alan, an active sports enthusiast had played lots of different sports regularly when he was younger including basketball, American football, surfing and tennis – but, these had all contributed to his existing pain.

Alan commented: “I have always enjoyed my sport, particularly cycling – I have cycled from John O’Groats to Land Ends and enjoyed many cycling tours around Europe so when I stopped being able to do this, I knew I had to do something about it. Also, my work was being adversely affected – I conduct audits and need to walk around premises regularly as well as extensive international travel, involving lots of walking through airports – which I was finding it more difficult to do.”

Initially, Alan had a few physiotherapy sessions and it was quickly identified he did not have any muscular pain and needed to see an orthopaedic surgeon. His Physiotherapist recommended Mr Vedi.

Alan had an X-ray and MRI revealing he had osteoarthritis in both hips - with his right hip worse than the left. The findings showed deposits in his bone had aggravated things and both his hips were damaged. Alan had a medical family so knew the chances of success was high, so it was a simple decision to have a hip replacement at Spire Thames Valley Hospital in Wexham.

Within four weeks of surgery, it became clear Alan also needed to do the second hip before Lockdown happened.

Alan had his second hip replacement in March just before Lockdown. Learning from his previous experience, when he slipped on the stairs which slowed his recovery down by two to three weeks, Alan decided to stay downstairs for the first four weeks. He was able to walk half a mile most days and then after eight weeks, Alan could walk 1-2 miles and then after 12 weeks Alan could cycle properly.

“Although I had surgery just before lockdown, I wasn’t then able to do the pool element of the rehab exercises, as pools were closed – but I knew how to follow the rehab exercises at home which I did religiously.”

“I am now pain free and able to work properly, walk and enjoy 50-mile cycle trips and my wife has even told me I’m much more cheerful! Without Mr Vedi my active life would have been over. Thank you so much. Mr Vedi was extremely informative - going through all the options and was clear in his communication. He is very personable and dedicated and I would not hesitate in recommending him.”
