Stroke patient’s life transformed with hip replacement surgery

Stroke patient’s life transformed with hip replacement surgeryJaswinder and Roop Chumber had married and started life in London in their early 20s.

Despite his age, Roop had always had a troublesome knee and had repeated visits to his GP, but in his 30s he began to have a distinctive limp which restricted his level of activity.

Roop went back to the GP and was referred to Mr Vedi, who said it was a problem with his hip and not his knee. Mr Vedi advised him not to have it operated on yet and to try to keep going for now, but it would need to be replaced later.

Then in 2015, at the age of 46, Roop suffered a massive left-sided stroke which had devastating consequences. Despite experiencing no pain because of the extremity of the numbing in his leg, his left leg was obviously dragging along when he walked. But then his pain seemed to get much worse, becoming so excruciating when he walked that he became wheelchair-bound, and had to resort to crawling up the stairs to get about.

His wife Jaswinder, encouraged Roop to go back to the GP and was referred to the Hillingdon Hospital, where they advised he needed an operation but were wary of potential complications arising because he was a stroke patient.

As a result, the Chumbers decided to get a second opinion and go privately to see Mr Vedi again – whom they had seen 10 years previously.  Mr Vedi said Roop had severe osteoarthritis of the left hip, but he was very confident he could help and that he should enjoy a positive outcome. Mr Vedi explained the pros and cons and emphasised because Roop had endured a haemorrhage and not a blood clot this would give bode well when operating.

The complex surgery went really well although Roop initially had an adverse reaction to the blood thinning medicine.

Mr Chumber said “In our long journey, it has been all about getting the right advice and the right surgeon. We are so fortunate to have met Mr Vedi. He is extremely professional, and his knowledge is quite astounding. He explained everything so clearly to both of us, giving us that reassurance we needed to hear despite my many issues. The surgery he performed has been completely life-changing for me. I am walking so much better, and I can now get up and down the stairs easily, my hip is pain free, and at long last I can finally sleep.

“Mr Vedi has somehow managed to equal the length of both my legs, prior to the surgery my left leg was 15mm shorter. Now I can buy a normal pair of shoes, without the need for shoe raises – something I didn’t think would ever happen.”

Mr Vedi said “I am so pleased to hear Roop is doing so well after the complex surgery.  He has had a very difficult time so it is wonderful to hear Roop can now embrace life and enjoy spending quality time with his family without pain.  I wish them all very much happiness”.
